Ewan died yesterday.
It is all a big shock to us.
We thought we had the Giardia under control and then he got the nasty thing on his back which didnt heal well so we took him back to the vet on Friday and they scheduled to stitch him up on Saturday - a routine thing, when they put him under the general anesthetic he nearly died, they found huge amounts of fluid on his lungs which they drained, then they took xrays and discovered that one of his lungs had collapsed.
The poor beautiful dog hadnt even complained.
We had him in for emergency surgery on Sunday and they thought it would still be routine, with a longer recovery but ok. They managed to successfully complete the surgery but they couldnt bring him back from the anesthetic.

Sore puppy
last night Ewan was a bit sore and when we looked at his neck, it was a bit weapy, when we cleaned it up the hair just came away. Today at the vet they think that maybe it was a whitetail spider bite - yuck. Poor dog he is on antibiotics for his gut, antibiotics for his skin and anti-inflamatories for his hind leg.
its so gross and we feel so sorry for him - he cant wear his nice coat and he is a bit miserable

40 degrees Gale Force Winds - sounds like the right time to get out on the bay
On Friday Eve and I stepped aboard Wind Charmer the number one vessel in the Melbourne Sailing School fleet as we took our Competent Crew Level II course, we were with Phil (a publisher from Melbourne) who was taking his skipper course and Master Stuart who was there to teach.
The course across the bay in 25-35 knots of wind (and 40 degrees of heat) we made for Port Arlington, then took a rest (visiting the Grand Hotel) then dinner on the boat and a night sail into the wind (it had turned by then from North to South Westerly) and tacked our way into the darkness, down a narrow and unlit channel all the way to Queenscliff.
We arrived a little after midnight at Queenscliff and slept on the boat, up early we went out towards the Rip in fairly slack water then sailed our way back to Point Lonsdale for lunch and back to Sandringham around 6pm - exhausted not at all - we had a dinner party to go to ;-)

Sid Patterson Grand Prix, the 2008 Australian Madison and good food
Its funny how Melbourne just gets on and does the most amazing things, its the food festival so we caught the tram (5 minutes) into town and got off at Fed Square for the Great Aussie BBQ, we enjoyed Beef from Neil Perry and the Rockpool team, Goat from Movida, another dish from Circa - it was all great.
We watched cooking demonstrations on the stage (love the fake lawn)
I loved the white shed, bbq, lawn ornaments etc..
We wandered from Fed Square over to Birrarung Mar where we watched them putting up the Ferris Wheel and listened to the Federation Bells
Then we went along to the voda arena to watch the Australian National Madison Championship (a bike race) which was fantastic fun
then we walked home (as you do when you live in Sth Melbourne).
Sunday we enjoyed more of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival cycling in to Fed Square again for the Thai experience enjoying more food and festivities with thousands of people (no pix this time).

we went and had lovely afternoon / evening picnic at Cruden Farm (just us and about 5,000 other people) it was a fantastic event beautifully timed with Dame Elisabeth Murdoch's 99th birthday. The farm was bought for Elisabeth by her husband Keith as a wedding present (she was 19) she has cared for and developed the garden ever since.
For more information on Cruden Farm see the ABC Gardening Australia website http://www.abc.net.au/gardening/stories/s998251.htm

St Crispin's Day October 25
Crispin was a nobly born Roman who, along with his brother Crispinius, became a missionary to Gaul. They took up the cobbler's trade so the faithful wouldn't have to support them - or, depending on the version you read - so they could give shoes to the poor. Crispin and Crispinius were martyred around 256, and over the years their stomping grounds became popular shrines. St. Crispin's Feast Day is October 25.
Steps:
1. Read the story of Crispin and his brother. Like all stories of the saints, it mingles fact with fantasy and the horrific with the inspiring.
2. Throw a party for all your friends who come under Crispin's patronage: not only cobblers and shoemakers but also weavers, tanners and makers of gloves, lace and saddles.
3. Attend a performance of Shakespeare's "Henry V," or rent a video or audio edition. King Henry invokes Crispin and Crispinius on the eve of the Battle of Agincourt.
4. Buy yourself a new pair of shoes. Or, if you're an equestrian, treat yourself to that new saddle you've been wanting.
5. Buy some shoes, gloves and scarves and give them to the charity of your choice.
Tips: Even if you're not Catholic or particularly religious, Saint Crispin's Day is a good day to honor lives well lived, beliefs held dear and shoes well made.
From Henry V (William Shakespeare)
This day is called the feast of Crispian: He that outlives this day, and comes safe home, Will stand a tip-toe when the day is named, And rouse him at the name of Crispian. He that shall live this day, and see old age, Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours, And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian:' Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars. And say 'These wounds I had on Crispin's day.' Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot, But he'll remember with advantages What feats he did that day: then shall our names. Familiar in his mouth as household words Harry the king, Bedford and Exeter, Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester, Be in their flowing cups freshly remember'd. This story shall the good man teach his son; And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by, From this day to the ending of the world, But we in it shall be remember'd; We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile, This day shall gentle his condition: And gentlemen in England now a-bed Shall think themselves accursed they were not here, And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

As the beach at Somers has washed away the last couple of years, these old boat sheds are going away with the sea, this is one of the last along this strip, good to see it being put to use.
Further up 'people with serious money' have built a wall for protection from the waves and turned the boat shed into a poolside cabana - seems an odd idea to have a pool about 3 metres from the sea but there you go!

Bikes
Ok I seem to be getting a little fanatical about the bike riding, now I am even taking pictures of other people on bikes. Sunday in Elwood is famous for the cyclists who head down the beach towards Frankston (it depends how fit and strong you are, as to how far you go). I went out at 2pm, got drowned in torrential rain and strong sea winds and got back about 4pm - BUT I did go about 50kms, not bad for my first longer ride in quite some years.

Those who are amused by these things will pleased to note I am now well fitted for cycling lycra!

Sunday
Saturday night was hard, the flats next door had a party (imagine 50 people having a great time outside your bedroom window) which was kind of fine even though it went till at least 3am.
It was topped however by the unbelievable decision of one of the other residents of the flats next door deciding to practise his drums between 4 and 5 am, and no he was NOT GOOD..
Spent Sunday largely on the boat, lots of cut and polish - hours of it, replaced all the sheets and did a bit of general tinkering - quite happy with it really.
Did some more work on the Melbourne Guide, and turned comments back on.. not that I have fixed the spam proofing.

all this polishing I don't think I will be able to lift a coffee tomorrow.

CBC Radio 3
I have previously mentioned that the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation website is one of my favourites, it has wonderful photography, eclectic music and interesting stories, such as this one about a group of surfers travelling up the Amazon River to surf a 8ft wall of water know as Pororoca which is caused by the incoming tide tearing up the river the surfers ride for up to 30 minutes on the waves which only occur once a day.
The website is also one of the most innovative uses of flash technology that I have seen, it is totally engaging.

I have brought comments back - hopefully the spammers have moved on now.. I have also updated the name, noting that this is the third version of the site and with a number of minor improvements we are now up to release version 3.6 appropriately in my 36 year.

Fab channel
Fab Channel - a fantastic collection of great concerts all filmed in Amsterdam adn all available on demand and free - but if you don't have broadband well it might challenge your systems.
You can see Michael Franti, Tricky, Paul Oakenfield, Ryan Adams and Morcheeba, but I am particularly taken with the Dutch Air Guitar Championships

The Spark - home of the Stinky Feet diaries
Wierd stuff alright - this site is a couple of years old but has amazing stuff including the death test (when are you going to die) and the excellent stinky feet and stinky meat diaries.
in the Stinky Feed diaries amazingly the writer infects himself with atheletes food and records the horrible decay of his feet (with pictures...)

Xmas Spirit

You have to wonder why it is that there are so many australians willing to go to extreme lengths to have the absolute tackiest christmas (sorry xmas) decorations around - these were at Pambula on the NSW south coast

Bartlett for President

If you are a fan of The West Wing and why wouldnt you be ..? you would be well aware that president Jed Bartlett (actor Martin Sheen) would make a preferable president to George Bush (but then he does get paid a lot more to act as the president than Bush gets to be the president...!)
The finale of the current series is a cliff hanger and the new series is just around the corner - so I found this fan site

Man and Wife

Currently reading the latest novel from Tony Parsons "Man and Wife" which is the kind of book that leaves you quite disturbed and trying to work out if the reason is largely due to similarities you find in your own thinking - maybe everyone thinks this way.
I know that Rav & I have both identified closely with his earlier book "Man and Boy"
Worth a read [click here] to view on amazon.com

Franti

Friday in Melbourne and Michael Franti and his spearhead collective took the stage at Festival Hall and made it shake its groove thang.
any Michael Franti concert is a somewhat spiritual experience - his lyrics and passion lifts the audience from one crescendo to another.
highlights of the show - included the 'impromptu' wedding proposal (adam from adelaide) and getting anita to sing (who is really afraid of singing publicly - YOU)
those who have read my rambings before know that I was inspired last time Michael visited Australia - again with this tour I was far from disappointed the flippant drop into Nirvana's nevermind just added to what was an outstanding concert.

it is a real combination of streaming audio and imagery (no streaming video - so its almost narrowband compatable - not that I have tried).

Merricks - Sailing

I managed to get out for a sail on Saturday - not that I can lay claim to this picture, it was taken by one of the other club members a couple of weeks ago, but still it is as good a picture as any of the view as you shoot away from the shore on a racing day
